The Consoling Memory of God’s Redemptive Works (written by Asaph)
Scripture: Psalm 77: 1-14
1 I cried out to God with my voice – To God with my voice; And He gave ear to me.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing; My soul refused to be comforted.
3 I remembered God, and was troubled; I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed.
4 You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
5 I have considered the days of old, The years of ancient times.
6 I call to remembrance my song in the night; I meditate within my heart, And my spirit makes diligent search.
7 Will the Lord cast off forever? And will He be favorable no more?
8 Has His mercy ceased forever? Has His promise failed forevermore?
9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies?
10 And I said, “This is my anguish; But I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
11 I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
12 I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds.
13 Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Who is so great a God as our God?
14 You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples.
Observation:
The book of Psalms is a compilation of Hebrew songs and poems for use in congregational worship and private devotion. The main writer of this book is King David with other songs from Moses, Asaph, Heman, the songs of Korah, Solomon and Ethan.
For the first 9 verses of the chapter, the writer writes of times when God is silent in our times of trouble. The writer does mention that God is listening in verse 1, which implies that God is there during these times. The next 5 verses follow up with hope and why we believe in our God, even though he is still silent. I sum the last 5 verses as having faith in God.
Application:
For me, this song is a way of life that we should all have. During good times, we are to give thanks to God. During the bad times, we should still give thanks to God and our motivation for doing this is because He has delivered us before and He will do it again. The latter is hard to do but reading from the last 5 verses, the writer says that we should focus on His good deeds and promises during our times of trouble. To me, that is one of the many reasons why we meditate on His word.
Prayer:
Thank you Father for delivering me from my times of trouble and thank you Father for still being there with me during my current times of trouble. I believe in You and I trust in You. In all things that I do, may I always remember of Your greatness and focus on You. I pray that You have all the glory. In Your mighty name I pray, Amen.
