Scripture:
12 Moses said to the LORD, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”
14 The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”
17 And the LORD said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”
Observation:
When the Israelites created a golden calf idol to worship in Moses’ absence, God was so angered by their disobedience that although He kept His promise to give the Israelites the Promised Land, He told Moses He would not go with them. Moses, however, was not content unless God was intimately present in their lives and in their journey. He expressed this candidly to God, and shows a close friendship with God built on complete honesty.
Application:
This scripture is a reminder to me that as with all close friendships, my friendship with God has to be based on complete honesty in order for me to build a deeper relationship with Him. I should be able to tell God exactly how I feel, even if it is complaining about seemingly minor things, telling Him if I have felt let down by Him or arguing with Him. I believe that God wants me to be genuine and to surrender all my concerns to Him at all times in order for Him to respond as my closest friend and the God of my life.
Prayer:
Father God, thank you for being my best friend. Thank you for loving me so much that You are interested in every burden that weighs on me as well as every little thing that brings me joy. Help me to remember that You are always present and to seek Your guidance in every aspect of my life. I trust that all Your plans for me were formed with utmost love for me. In Your Son’s most precious name, Amen.
